2026 is Poised to Be Dubbed the Age of the Amphibian Adventure.

While I found the recent Day of the Devs showcase was a delight to watch, my main revelation was perhaps unexpected: I am convinced that 2026 will be the peak period for frogs in video games.

No fewer than five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—in some way feature these amphibious creatures. Considering a gathering of frogs is termed an army, it feels they are launching an invasion.

A Legacy of Leaping

Croaking characters are far from new to the world of games. Looking back at titles like Frogger to the beloved froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have enjoyed a cult following. But, their prevalence has seemingly surged in recent times.

A cursory search for "frog game" on Steam yields an staggering number of results. Granted, some of these are low-budget titles, a sizable number are bona fide amphibian adventures.

Tracking the Tadpole Trend

To grasp this trend, I undertook a thorough analysis into the past five years of amphibian-themed gaming on Steam. My methodology was somewhat arbitrary, focusing on games with frogs in the title or clearly visible in screenshots.

The data reveal an unmistakable trend: a steady uptick from less than 20 titles in 2020 to nearly 60 in 2025.

This notable escalation prompts the question: where is this interest coming from? The amphibian's rising status in the public consciousness is also visible elsewhere, such as the popularity of Frog and Toad as nostalgic figures. However, the trend in gaming seems uniquely pronounced.

Designing for a Sticky Tongue

In my opinion, this is a trend I can get behind. Frogs offer built-in creative potential for game developers.

  • Charming Creatures: They are perfectly suited to be designed as quirky characters that tend to be a standout feature in any game.
  • Innovative Systems: Their elastic legs and prehensile tongues lend themselves to a myriad of unique mechanics.

Many of the showcased games directly leverage these traits. Examples include the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the extra-long limb puzzles of Stretchmancer.

The Leap Into 2026

So, what is the outlook for 2026? Given five frog games already announced before the year has even started—and the potential for more—the evidence suggests for it to be the most significant year so far.

If these games find success—and historically, games from this showcase tend to succeed—we may indeed be on the verge of a full-blown amphibian entertainment revival.
